Located in the heart of Barcelona, this project translates the Mediterranean way of living into bright and open spaces. Designed to enjoy both the interior life of the home and the vitality of its urban surroundings, while highlighting cultural heritage and local tradition.
This renovation transforms a 1960s office building with a structure and façade characteristic of its time, into a multifamily residential building with a layout that responds to new ways of living.
The design of the envelope creates a dialogue with the classical architecture of the Eixample while acting as a ‘tribute to light’, through a rhythmic composition of solids and voids featuring horizontal wooden shutters. These ensure both interior privacy and solar protection for the southeast façade.
The expressiveness of the façade is the result of the material logic applied: limestone and wood engage in dialogue with the finishes and tones of the surrounding buildings.
Compositionally, the project reconfigures the building’s central bay to generate a new vertical circulation core and a new courtyard, creating two apartments per floor.
All living areas of the apartments, spacious and filled with natural light, face the exterior façades while the more private spaces open onto the new central courtyard, enabling natural cross ventilation.
In this way, the building avoids the typical through-apartment layout of this Barcelona neighborhood, which usually lacks light in the central areas.
The layout of the apartments revolves around a versatile central element that integrates the kitchen and allows it to be concealed, creating a distribution hub at the very core of the home.
Stone and wood are the two materials used for both wall and floor finishes, acting as the unifying thread of the entire project.
In the interiors, oak wood and white Carrara marble were chosen to achieve a chromatic and sensory balance that reinforces the overall sobriety of the design.
